Geography

Intent
As Geographers, our children will develop the skills to navigate and engage with the world they live. It is our intention to inspire a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with our children for the rest of their lives. We want to them to become inquisitive and interested in where we live locally but also much further afield. We aim to grow and nurture their knowledge of the world, making it meaningful by linking it across the curriculum and through core subjects. In particular, each year group will study various places across Earth and have the opportunity to intensively investigate, explore, present and gain knowledge. Above all, we want our children to know the sky’s the limit!
Implementation
Ready, Reflective, Respectful, Responsible, Resilient
In Early Years
Geography in the Early Years Foundation Stage at Skelton focuses on developing children’s curiosity about their world, people, and places through exploration, observation, and play. Situated within “Understanding the World,” it involves investigating immediate surroundings, seasons, and basic mapping to understand concepts like space, place, and change.
People, Culture and Communities:
- Describe their immediate environment using knowledge from observation, discussion, stories, non-fiction texts and maps
- Know some similarities and differences between different religious and cultural communities in this country, drawing on their experiences and what has been read in class
- Explain some similarities and differences between life in this country and life in other countries, drawing on knowledge from stories, non-fiction texts and – when appropriate – maps.
The Natural World
- Explore the natural world around them, making observations and drawing pictures of animals and plants
- Know some similarities and differences between the natural world around them and contrasting environments, drawing on their experiences and what has been read in class
- Understand some important processes and changes in the natural world around them, including the seasons and changing states of matter

Impact
In order to effectively design tasks it is imperative that the classroom teacher understands fully the success that pupils have had with their learning. We use our purpose built App to track skills progress across Geography.
It is worth noting that we define success in our curriculum beyond the assessment of the foundation subjects. We also look to build self –belief and respect so that all children develop a sense of self-worth. We hope to see the children realise new skills and find new interests and talents along their learning journey.
